According to statistics, up to 80 per cent of Czech and Slovaks go for mushroom hunting, at least now and then.
But mushrooms grow where and when they want, being highly variable in appearance at that!
Mycology is a science which, more or less successfully, tries to sort things out in the big world of fungi. Many well-known mycologists recall with nostalgia the old golden days of being able to “identify” all mushrooms they´d found with a little help of a 50-species pocket guide.
The deeper a mycologist penetrates to fungi life the more he or she feels the complexity of this mysterious world. As the Slovak mycologist Pavol Skubla pointed out:We are all just beginners...
Mycology could be compared with Bokononism in Kurt Vonegut's Cat's Cradle where the god Bokonon says: "You are not prohibited from attempting to understand it - you just won't succeed..."
I've created this website in a modest attempt to help increase the understanding of the mysterious world of mushrooms and toadstools (including slime molds). The pages linked to this site are mostly in Czech but I make a point of having an English translation of at least the headers here as well. Anyway – the Czech is a nice language to learn in which much valuable mycological literature exists (e.g. by Albert Pilat, Miroslav Svrcek, Vladimir Antonin, to name just a few) :-)
